According to the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), a learnership is a work-based learning programme that results in an NQF registered qualification. Learnerships are directly linked to an occupation or area of expertise, for instance, business practice, generic management, or manufacturing, engineering and related activities.
How does a Learnership Work?
The learner is needed to complete an academic course and practical training at the workplace for a successful graduation. Unemployed adults can also take part in a learnership if the company is willing to take them on; this is called a sponsored learnership. The theoretical portion of the training is offered by an accredited training service provider, while the practical learning takes place at the workplace under the supervision of a mentor.
Learnerships last for the duration of the time to complete the qualification. During the learnership, learners will be required to complete assignments, tasks and practical tests and projects. They will be formally assessed in the classroom and workplace. If all these assignments are completed successfully, the learner will be awarded an NQF-registered qualification, which is recognised nationally. The learner will receive a certificate stating the qualification and the area of skill development.
