A Calling Beyond Career: Zanele’s Journey in Medicine

Zanele Mokgatsana

5th year medical student at the University of the Witwatersrand

Medicine has always been more than a career choice for me; it is a calling that has shaped who I am and guided my path. From an early age, I was deeply touched by the role that doctors play in alleviating suffering, restoring hope in those facing illnesses, and offering compassionate care, which resonates with the core values that I believe in.

Coming from a financially disadvantaged background, my journey has been marked with significant challenges. The weight of outstanding university fees has often felt overwhelming and there were moments when financial strain threatened to overshadow my academic pursuit.

Receiving this bursary has meant so much more to me than I can fully express. This bursary has alleviated my financial constraints and has allowed me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies and clinical training, without the constant anxiety of financial hardship.

I am sincerely grateful for this support given to me by Tiso Skills Fund and Aurogen SA Pty Ltd. To me, it is more than financial assistance, but a chance to keep going and keep believing in my dream of becoming a medical doctor that I have always wanted to be. I carry this opportunity with great responsibility. I am committed to work hard, make the funding opportunity worthwhile, and contribute to the healthcare system by providing medical care to others with compassion and dedication.
